This listing is for the book, the Carl Barks Original Art Edition, autographed by the author. The book will ship the next day after payment, but not on Sunday. It has also been available at comic shops and elsewhere online and sometimes at comic conventions or shows starting in 2023. If your comic shop does not have copies in stock, the shop can re-order the book and may have it within about two weeks, so you are encouraged to buy it elsewhere if you don't want to order it on ebay from me. It will be available in comic shops and online in early August of 2024, and it is available now in a different listing. In 2025, Carl Barks Original Art Edition MGM Volume 3 will be published completing a set of all Carl Barks' comic book art for MGM comic books, published from proofs of the original artwork and at the same size as the art was drawn. There is also a preliminary picture of the cover design for Volume 3 although that may not be the final cover. Volume 1 is approximately 14.3 x 20.3 inches. Volume 2 and 3 are approximately 18 x 26 inches. Volume 1 is large enough to print Barks' 5 early 3-tier MGM stories at the size they were drawn in 1942 and 1943, 12.5 x 17.75 inches image area, one art page to the book page. Barks' later 4-tier art, starting in December, 1943, drawn on pages with an image area of 16 x 23.25 inches, is too large to fit on a single page of volume 1, but Barks cut these large pages into 2 half pages to work on them on his drawing board and taped the top and bottom half of the pages together before turning them in to the office. So 4 of his later and larger 4 tier stories are printed sideways so that if you hold the book sideways, you can see a full page of Barks art on each double page spread for these 4 later stories as shown in several pictures. Volume 2 and 3 are much larger books, as you can see from the book photos of volume 1 and 2 side by side. Volume 2 and 3 are large enough that a full 4-tier page can be printed on each book page, and both Volume 2 and 3 each print 13 Barks stories drawn in that larger size. The Carl Barks Original Art Edition presents a nice overview of Carl Barks' work for the MGM comics for people interested in the art of Carl Barks. It provides a relatively inexpensive opportunity to own high quality copies of his art at the size it was drawn. It was printed in an edition of over 500 copies and copies remain available. Volume 2 is a more expensive book printed in an edition of less than 150 copies for a smaller audience of people who are interested enough in Barks' work to want to own all of his MGM work in high resolution full original art size copies. This is also the intent for Volume 3, to be published in 2025. The Carl Barks Original Art Edition volumes are Artist-Edition-type-books very similar to IDW’s Artist Editions, or Fantagraphics’ Studio Editions, and similar books from other publishers. These books reproduce the original art, usually in the full size that it was originally drawn, usually from new scans or photographs of the original art. So looking at the art in these books is very close to looking at the original art, often close enough that if you didn’t know it was printed in a book, you would think it WAS the original art. If you cut a page out of the book and framed it under glass, in many cases you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. The pages in the Carl Barks Original Art Edition volumes are printed from proofs which are derived from the 7 x10 inch photo negatives taken of the original art by Western Publishing between 1943 and 1947 because none of the original art for these stories actually survives. The proofs have resolution to spare, and can be blown up even larger than the original art and still look excellent, sharp, clear, and detailed. This is the first time these pages have been reproduced in the size they were actually drawn. Except for several expensive European limited editions of the formerly "unpublished" censored Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge pages, this is the first time any Carl Barks pages have been reproduced and sold at the size they were drawn. The Carl Barks Original Art Edition is a large 108 page book that reproduces Carl Barks’ art and stories in the actual size that the art was originally drawn. If you have seen the Don Rosa Artist Edition, the Carl Barks Original Art Edition is the same size, but has fewer pages The book is over 14 inches wide and 20 inches tall (37x52 cm) and weighs over 5 pounds. There are 2 Happy Hound (Droopy) stories, 3 Benny Burro solo stories, and 4 stories of the combined Barney Bear and Benny Burro feature. The book prints 9 complete Carl Barks stories in the full size they were originally drawn in glorious black and white. Looking at these pages as printed in this book is like looking at the pages fresh from the master’s drawing board. Five early stories from 1943 are printed one art page to the page in the book. The image size is about 12.5 by 17.75 inches, the size that Barks drew his original art in 1942 and most of 1943. Beginning in November 1943, Barks started drawing in the larger size of 16 inches by 23.25 inches and continued to draw that size for the rest of his career with only very rare exceptions. Those larger pages are so large that in order to fit them into this already large book, each half page must be printed sideways on a single page so that if you turn the book sideways you can see each full page at the size it was drawn, one full page at a time, but in a double page spread of the book. See pictures 4, 5, 7, 8, and 12. Look at the pictures: The first picture shows volume 1 and 2 side by side. The next four pictures show the cover and some interior pages of volume 1 with a yard stick or meter stick next to them. The others are size comparisons to the Don Rosa Artist Edition, the Prince Valiant Studio Edition, and to an actual sized facsimile print of a Prince Valiant original art page that was included with the Prince Valiant Studio Edition. The next picture is another view of the front cover. Then there are 3 more pictures showing the book cover or contents compared to several issues of Our Gang Comics, the title in which these stories were originally published. Next is a picture showing all 3 volumes of the Carl Barks Original Art Edition side by side, and next is a picture of my proof copy of the Carl Barks Original Art Edition MGM Volume 3 next to a copy of the Prince Valiant Studio Edition. The next 2 pictures of the three Carl Barks Original Art Edition MGM volumes in a front cover view and a spine view with some other books. The next 2 pictures show a double page spread in volume 2 in one picture and a comparison of the same page in a double page spread in volume 1 and as a single page in volume 2. Volume 1 and 2 are lithographed hard cover books with sewn signatures and can be opened to lay flat. Volume 3, to be published in 2025 will be the same. Finally there are 2 pictures comparing the size of Volume 2 to the size of 4 volumes of Another Rainbow's hard cover Carl Barks Library and to 2 volumes of Fantagraphics' Complete Carl Barks Disney Library and 2 volumes of the Carl Barks Library.
