Description: Canonsburg Pottery “Larkspur” Mid-Century Modern Vintage Serving Dinner Plates Canonsburg Pottery Larkspur Serving Dinner Plates Manufacture Date: 1950s Canonsburg, Pa Discontinued Condition - Excellent Size: 10" Canonsburg Pottery’s Larkspur Pattern is a quintessential mid-century-modern china pattern. Its clean, sleek uncluttered design features pink flowers (maroon) and wispy, silver leaves with other light blue fauna against a white background with a silver rim and handle. Canonsburg Pottery Company was founded in 1909 in Pennsylvania and went out of business in 1978. John George, the nephew of W. S. George, founded the Canonsburg China Company in 1900 in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. The company's initial products were sanitary and hotel wares, but the name was later changed to the Canonsburg Pottery Company, which produced mid-century modern dinnerware. After the Steubenville Pottery closed in 1959, their molds and equipment were sold to Canonsburg Pottery. Two of Steubenville's most popular shapes, Adam Antique and Rose Point, were made by Cannonsburg in the 1960s. The company is known for its decaled china and is said to have created some of the finest dinnerware in the United States for over 65 years. Mid-Century Modern vintage china, popularized during the 1940s to 1960s, embodies a design aesthetic marked by simplicity, functionality, and bold innovation. Characterized by clean lines and sleek, minimalist forms, this dinnerware often incorporates vibrant and iconic color palettes, featuring hues like pink, silver, turquoise, mustard yellow, avocado green, and burnt orange. The era's enthusiasm for technological progress is evident in space-age influences, resulting in futuristic and often asymmetrical designs. Embracing both organic forms and geometric precision, these pieces epitomize a balance between simplicity and sophistication. Collectors and enthusiasts value Mid-Century Modern vintage china for its timeless appeal, serving as both functional dinnerware and artifacts that capture the essence of a unique period in design history.
