Once inside, the insect drowns in the rainwater at the bottom and is digested by fungi and bacteria that reside there, as well as by the plant's own enzymes. Despite its appetite for insects, the pitcher plant is the only site where one species of mosquito will breed. Larvae feed on the decomposing insects before hatching, mating and returning to the pitcher to lay eggs. Today, pitcher plants are favorites of home gardeners (and kids needing a science fair project that isn't a baking soda volcano!), in part because of their hardiness. The purple pitcher plant was declared the provincial flower of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1954. It is the only member of the genus Sarracenia that can inhabit cold temperate climates.
