Description: Here we have what must be considered one of the definitive albums from the early, classic years of Krautrock/art-rock giants CAN: Monster Movie, their debut, first released in 1969, reissued over three decades later in this Super Audio gold CD edition. This mindblowing set was the world's introduction to the sheer brilliance of one of the world's finest art-rock groups. Can came to be when four German musicians, all from wildly different backgrounds – avant-gardists Holger Czukay (bass and editing) and Irwin Schmidt (keyboards), psychedelic rocker Michael Karoli (guitar) and jazzman Jaki Liebezeit (drums) – came together with the mad notion of combining their diverse specialties into something completely new. The group's wild card was their vocalist: black American G.I. Malcolm Mooney, who could spur himself to truly transported heights on the microphone. The Can sound was a heady, highly rhythmic sustained groove, anchored by the hypnotic pulse of Liebezeit's drumming, edited and spliced into song-collages through the studio wizardry of bassist Czukay. It was an intoxicating mix that has proven to be hugely influential to this day. (Public Image Ltd’s masterpiece Metal Box owes a rather largish debt to Can.) Monster Movie is a crucial item in their discography, featuring their side-long masterpiece, "Yoo Doo Right." And this remastered SACD edition sounds like a million bucks on your box, accompanied with an expanded booklet with photos, the original cover art and superb liner notes from UK critic David Stubbs.
