California’s San Francisco Bay Area—Native Peoples of the East Bay Brochure

Description: To those unfamiliar, the Bay Area’s East Bay Region (which includes Contra Costa and Alameda Counties) is the heart of that great metropolitan area, encompassing both the geographic center of its landmass and a plurality of its 7+ million inhabitants. A line of cities (including Richmond, Berkeley, Oakland, Alameda, San Leandro, Hayward and Fremont) sits on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, making up part of the urban core of the Bay Area. In the years before Spanish and Mexican settlement of this area (circa 1800), the local native peoples lived in relative comfort and security, amidst a veritable Eden, due to the region’s mild climate & fertile land, plentiful game & bounteous coastal waters. This is a great foldout brochure (from the East Bay Regional Park District, 2018) that tells some of the story of the area’s original inhabitants, the Ohlone, Bay Miwok and Delta Yokuts people, who knew and understood this rich land and its equally rich largesse, the unique rhythm of its seasons (defined more by rainfall rather than temperature). The brochure measures 12 x 9, on thick glossy paper and folds out to a poster size (36 x 24) map of the various independent tribes (23 in all) in the East Bay Region at the time of European contact. Other maps include ones showing the various tribal territories and language zones for the greater Bay Area, as well as European exploration (from 1542-1776), the Spanish Missionization of the region (from 1770-1833) (which would prove calamitous to the native population, pretty much destroying their world), the secularization of the Missions and Rancho land grants during the Mexican period (from 1814-1846), the creation of the modern political boundaries of Alameda and Contra Costa (in 1865) and a public lands map of the East Bay in the present day.
