There's two small, separate concentrations of visible Au. You won't get your money's worth for there's only a couple of small exposures of precious metal, but I guarantee the authenticity and naturalness of the gold. Origin is Calaveras County, California. I suspect the gangue is a slate, quartzsite, graphite schist, or all of them. It's rare to find black, gold-bearing ores like this in the U.S. During the early years of the great California gold rush, artisans incorporated rich, Mother Lode ores into one-of-a-kind jewelry objects and ornately-decorated antiquities such as cane handles/walking sticks, snuff boxes, match safes, watches, stick pins, knife handles and pistol grips. As for creative ornamental applications back in the 1800s, the sky seems to have been the limit. GeologyThe principal rocks underlying the area (Calaveras Cty.) are slate, impure quartzite and graphite schist of the Calaveras Formation (Carboniferous to Permian) which have been intruded by gabbroic stocks.
