MARDI GRAS refers to the events of the Carnival celebration, beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany or Three Kings Day (January 06, 2023) and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday (February 22 2023), which is known as Shrove Tuesday. The name Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", which reflects the practice of the last night of eating rich, fatty foods before the Lenten sacrifices and fasting of the Lenten season. During Mardi Gras parades it is customary for krewe members riding on or walking alongside of the parade floats throwing trinkets to the people in the crowd, prompting the crowd to yell, "Throw me something mister!" Of the most popular trinkets is the MARDI GRAS DOUBLOON, which is typically made of aluminum shaped like a coin and commemorates various Mardi Gras Krewes on one side and various themes on the other. The first doubloons used as throws from parades of Mardi Gras Krewes date to 1960, and these early doubloons are collectible. On his monthly Facebook show Doc Lucky’s Yo-Yo Talk, Episode 66 (02/03/23) said of the new Cajun Spinner’s Yeaux-Yeaux: “A beautiful line of fixed axle yo-yos, and I will tell you these look like they’re going to be highly collectible in the future.” And Lucky said of the Midnight Lightning Yeaux-Yeaux, “They were gorgeous. I think those yo-yos are fantastic. They are all very displayable yo-yos and that adds kind of the third ‘Lightning’ now that people need to add (to their collection) if they are going to have all three of the ‘Lightnings’.” The other two he was referring to were the 1950’s Duncan Litening, and the 1990’s Franklin Mint Duncan Litening reproduction.
