Description: Meyer_Trollhatta ca.1850 Meyer print TROLLHÄTTA FALL, SWEDEN Nice view titled Erster Trollhätta-Fall (Schweden), from steel engraving with fine detail and clear impression, approx. image size is 9.5 x 15 cm. From Meyer's Universum, published by Bibliographic Institute Hildburghausen Germany. Trollhättan, town, Älvsborg län (county), southwestern Sweden. Trollhättan lies along the Göta River, north-northeast of Göteborg and was once famous for its imposing waterfalls. Although the falls are now harnessed for hydroelectricity, they sometimes are reopened in the summer. Trollhättan was incorporated as a town in 1916. Notable features of the town are the state-owned Olide and Hojum power stations, which are largely responsible for electric-power distribution in western Sweden, and the Trollhätte Canal (built 1793-1800), which connects Vänern (lake) with Göteborg and the North Sea, overcoming a difference in height of 107 feet (33 m) by means of locks. The town is dominated by manufacturing, with products ranging from heavy machinery to phosphates and plastics. Pop. (1993 est.) mun., 51,673.
