Description: Set of Six ca. 1870-1890 Bawo & Dotter/J. Pouyat Limoges Hand Painted Elf Luncheon/Salad/Dessert Plates. Six plates are included in this set, all for one price. Measurements & Description: Each plate measures 8-1/2" wide and features a pastel blushed rim with a gold metallic scalloped edge. Maker's Marks: They have the printed Bawo & Dotter Red "Limoges" urn mark, which marked their decorated porcelain before they had their own porcelain factory. These pre-date the Elite Works factory. These also have "J.P.-over- L." marks as well; this is for the Jean Pouyat Limoges blanks used by the B&D studio to create these Elf Salad Plates. The 'J.P.'-over-'L' mark found on the back of these plates mug is the designation Pouyat used on its undecorated white wares. The mark used on decorated wares was 'J Pouyat Limoges' inside a wreath or 'J.P.' over 'L' with a second mark. That is missing on these plates and the second stamp represents the decorator. These are not marked with "France" which was required for good imported into the U.S. beginning in 1891. Company History: Bawo & Dotter was a New York company established in 1860s to import porcelain mainly from Limoges. In 1870s they established in Limoges a porcelain decorating manufactory called The Elite Works. In 1896 the manufacture began producing own porcelain. Production lasted till 1914 when World War I began and was resumed after the war ended. Next significant changes came in 1924. Bawo and Dotter took over the William Guerin's company and merged it with the previously acquired by W. Guerin factory Pouyat Porcelaines in one company: Guérin-Pouyat-Elite Limited. The firm continued production until 1932. Seller's Notes: My search for anything similar came up with no results. It is so rare to find matching sets like this, and these are in fantastic condition! They are perfect for display or entertaining. They'll bring a touch of class the afternoon tea serving sandwiches or pastries, or for dessert serving cakes or pastries. Also, a great conversation piece. Condition: Excellent antique condition. There are no chips, cracks, crazing or repairs. The pricing is for the set of six plates.
