Description: Part of Collier's Rocky Mountain Scenery collection. The narrow gauge rail line was carved through the canyon and ran from Golden to the mining towns. Item 487197 ◊ 1873 Stereoview, "Clear Creek Series - Hanging Rock, Looking Up." Collier's Rocky Mountain Scenery A rare and delightful "c1873 Stereoview Clear Creek Series - Hanging Rock, Looking Up." Published as part of the Collier's Rocky Mountain Scenery collection." The card measures 7" x 4", and very slightly curved with rounded corners. This is typical of stereoviews produced in the mid-1870's. On the back of the stereoview, it is labeled "Clear Creek Series – Hanging Rock Looking Up." The description states, "So narrow and crooked is the canon at this point that it becomes necessary to blast away the point of the rock, leaving it overhanging. But for the sharpness of the curve permitted by the narrow guage of the road, which is only three feet, construction of a railroad here would have been impossible. So now if you take a look at the front of the stereoview again you'll see a lot of rock rubble to the right of the railway, which is rock that was blasted away from the overhang. During the 1860s William A. H. Loveland began plans to build a transcontinental railroad line that would run through Golden, bypassing the rival town of Denver. The grading for the Colorado Central Railroad line was begun in 1868. The narrow gauge rail line from Golden reached the first of the mining towns in 1871. Other towns further up the canyon were connected by 1878. Passenger and freight trains made daily round trips, carrying supplies to the mines and towns and ore to Golden and further east. It is estimated that approximately 75 tons of supplies were transported to the mining towns daily. It was certainly a feat of modern engineering in 1873. But back to the back of the card again. No card is complete without a bit of romanticism. And the publisher accomplishes that: Where the proud Queen of Wilderness hath placed, By lake and cataract, her lonely throne,Sublime but dad delight thy soul hath known,Grazing on pathless glen and mountain high, Listning where from the cliffs the torrents thrown, Mingle their echoes with the eagle's cry."It is part of a series from Collier's Rocky Mountain Scenery, and it was published at Central City, Colorado. This card is fair to good condition. Fair because there is quite a bit of staining on the card edges, and even a tad on the photos. Good because the is still very strong, and the corners are only slightly bumped. Also the photos are very clear, with little surface damage, and they really "pop" when seen through a stereoviewer. In addition the poem on the back is still dark and easy to read. Please see all the photos above to confirm the condition of this stereoview. Although the research into 3D viewers and photos started back in the first part of the 1800's, the real heyday of the "modern" stereoview started when stereo-cameras became readily available to amateur photographers in the late 1800's. And their popularity continued to the middle of the 1900's. It is thanks to these photographers, that we can take a 3-D look into another time … in this case, early scenes from the great western state of Colorado.
