Description: PRINTS BOOKS PHOTOGRAPHS MANUSCRIPTS CURIOSITIES - TINTED VIEWS AND HAND-COLOURED COSTUME PLATES -GORSE (Pierre, French illustrator and lithographer, 1816-1875).An excellent collection of 31 original tinted [24] and hand-coloured [7] lithographic plates of the Pyrenees after Pierre Gorse, c1850-60.A total of 31 lithographs, of which 24 are tinted and 7 are hand-coloured, all removed from a larger collector's album and now loose on card mounts (with unrelated b/w engravings on the reverse of each). The hand-coloured plates have lettering in the lower margins 'Dessinê et Lith.iê par Gorse / Lith. Becquet fr. r. des Noyers, 37, Paris.' The tinted plates have similar lettering, though the publisher varies in a couple of cases (e.g. 'Ep. Monguillet, Editeur.'), as well as lettering in upper margin with location e.g. 'Hautes Pyrenees. / Vallê de St. Savin.' etc.Good condition. The plates are well preserved. Occasional marginal blemishes and/or handling marks. WouPlates laid down on album card, with a Gorse plate on the verso and and unrelated b/w engraving on the reverse of each sheet, though in one case, there is a Gorse plate and both the recto and the verso. The plates are evenly trimmed, leaving good margins. The letter press caption on the lower edge of each plate is trimmed away. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images closely. This collection original tinted lithographic views of the Pyrenees after Pierre Gorse are probably from the 1850s work Les Pyrenees monumentales et pittoresques, or similar works, and are ideal for framing. Included are 24 tinted views and 7 hand-coloured costume plates. They were trimmed by a collector in the 19th century and laid down on the card leaves of a contemporary album. On the reverse of the card mounts are unrelated b/w engravings on other subjects, including a good steel engraving of Napoleon brooding on a rocky outcrop on St. Helena. key words:
