Description: Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a beautiful KELVA Art Glass dresser box by the C. F. Monroe Co., c. 1900. Kelva is a category of decoration applied to Wave Crest glass which was produced as an opal glass blank and then decorated. There were not as many Kelva decorated items produced so it is much scarcer than other Wave Crest pieces. Much of the opal glass known as Wave Crest was produced by the Mt. Washington Glass Co. and was then purchased by the C. F. Monroe Co. as glass blanks to be decorated by their artists. Although this is a small box, it is elaborately decorated. The design features a dark mottled inky-blue background with beautifully hand painted floral design with ruby, pink and white flowers with jeweled stamens and is further decorated with beading (jeweled) design around the outer border. The box has its original silk lining in the top only. The top and base are fitted with a decorative brass collar with a tight hinge that opens and closes correctly. This box is marked with the Kelva trade mark stamp used by C. F. Monroe on their Kelva pieces. An example of this box is found on page 158 of the book "Wave Crest: The Glass of C. F. Monroe" by "Wilfred R. Cohen. Measures 3 1/4" high with a top diameter of 3" and base diameter of 3.75". Weighs 9.8 ounces. This nice box is in excellent Estate condition with the only noted flaw being the missing clasp on the collar. The background color is not faded nor is the paint worn - the decoration on this box is exceptional.
