Oscillating electrostatic force is exerted in front of the microphone diaphragm, providing the consequent response of the microphone. By applying an oscillating electrostatic force - sweeping over a frequency range from 100 Hz to 200 kHz - the pressure response can be tested. B&K also makes adapters for measuring ¼” microphones using the UA-0033. The first paragraph is reproduced here: 2.7 Electrostatic Actuator Calibration 2.7.1 Introduction The calibration of microphones using an electrostatic actuator is a widely applied laboratory method for determination of frequency response characteristics of measurement microphones. The actuator produces an electrostatic force which simulates a sound pressure acting on the microphone diaphragm. In comparison with sound based methods, the actuator method has a great advantage. It provides a simpler means to produce a well-defined calibration pressure over a wide frequency range without the special facilities of an acoustics laboratory.
