They were on their way to a dinner party, but had stopped by at his insistence. "A private celebration," he told them, smiling. Dr. Meredith was a small, graying man who man- aged to look like some kindly building janitor. In actuality he was head of the physics department at Columbia University and for the past ten years had been conducting experiments in molecular structures in his private laboratory in downtown Manhattan.
