Description: Broadway is an avenue in the New York City borough of Brooklyn that extends from the East River in the neighborhood to Williamsburg, in a southeasterly direction to East New York for a length of 4.32 miles. It was named for the Broadway in Manhattan. The East New York terminus is a complicated intersection with East New York Avenue, Fulton Street, Jamaica Avenue, and Alabama Avenue. The BMT Jamaica Line (J, M, and Z trains) of the New York City Subway runs on elevated tracks over Broadway from the Williamsburg bridge to East New York on its way to Queens. Broadway forms the boundary between the neighborhoods of Bushwick, which lies above Broadway to the northeast and Bedford-Stuyvesant, which is to the southwest. Wikipedia Just off Broadway on Throop Avenue stood The Gayety Theatre which opened in 1892 and met its demise in 1932. During most of this time, it was one of Williamsburg’s major legitimate theaters, and also featured high class burlesque and, at times, Yiddish drama. The 1914-5 edition of the American Movie Pictures Directory lists the Gayety Theatre as one of its participants as does the 1918 edition of the Graves Directory of Motion Pictures. Thus, while the Gayety Theatre mostly featured straight theater, it did, like the Lyric Theatre on neighboring Seigel Street, also feature some cinema during a portion of its very interesting life. Cinema Treasures The Gayety was an appreciated cinema treasures but the focus of this early card is the street scene and square in front of the theater with a little square and several gentleman hanging.
