Hurst & Blackett, Ltd. Full burgundy publishers' cloth, Spine with gilt rule to head and foot, gilt title towards head, gilt author towards center, gilt publisher at foot. Top edge gilt. Edgewear, corners bumped and rubbed, head and foot of spine ruffled with small, closed tears. Slightly sun faded pine has small white library stamp affixed to center. Both covers scuffed and rubbed with front cover fabric bubbling (loose from board). Bookplate, library plate and old photo laid in. Prior owners name stamped in bue ink to front free endpaper; booksellers note in pencil to pastedown. Half-title page separating from spine top and bottom, although all plates present, several are laid in. Intermittent toning and foxing throughout, focused on page edges. Not a pretty book, but a decent copy of a very scarce title on Somalia. 74 photographic illustrations with 24 in text drawings, with folding map at rear. After leaving the army he joined the Foreign Office as medical officer and served in British East Africa, British Somaliland (Somalia), Uganda and Abyssinia (Ethiopia) until 1915. He was also a keen traveler and zoologist who collected natural history material and published mainly on mammals.
