About the Design In 1967 the line to Southampton and Bournemouth was electrified, and a fleet of existing coaches was rebuilt to provide the new services. Internally they were given a more modern appearance by the widespread use of Formica panelling, and by a new design of fabric, featuring a blue/green check pattern. This design was simultaneously introduced on the also new Mark 2 locomotive hauled coaches which were being built at the time, and went on to last as a standard fitment throughout the life of British Rail, only being superseded by the new designs which accompanied sectorisation.
