Description: Brazil: Commemorative Medal for the Victory Over the Naval Revolt 1894. Rare bronze, 54 mm table medal, issued to commemorate the federal government’s victory over rebel naval officers. The mutiny was led by Admirals Custódio José de Melo and Saldanha da Gama, who put together a rebel fleet from Brazilian navy ships; the rebels claimed that President Floriano Peixoto had exceeded his powers. The revolt broke out in September 1893 at Rio de Janeiro, and was suppressed in March 1894 after a long blockade of the city. The reverse of the medal features the date, 15 November 1889, the day the previous imperial government overthrown and the Republic of Brazil proclaimed. The medal is toned and in near extremely fine condition; engravers-marked: “MILARIAO D./CARNEIRO G.” Authenticity guaranteed; 14-day return privilege (30 days overseas), excluding postage, provided item is returned in same condition when sold. Item will be shipped USPS First Class Mail; will combine postage for multiple purchases.
