The Haxby Obsolete Banknote Catalog number for this note is: MA280-A25. This note appears to have penned black signatures of the Cashier: Alvin Simonds and the President: G.W. Convirse. The note was monetized on January 13, 1863. According to Haxby, this bank existed from 1836 – 1865 and then converted over to become Charter #932, The Mechanics National Bank of Boston, Massachusetts, lasting until it liquidated on July 29, 1905. Serial # 41 Plate A This Banknote is printed in 1 Color Black and was printed by Rawdon, Wright & Hatch of New York. The central main vignette depicts a Paddle-Wheel Steamship with U.S. Flag. The left vignette depicts a Black- Smith at Anvil. The right vignette, an Allegorical Woman. The reverse of this note is unprinted. This Note is listed in Haxby as SENC, Surviving Examples Not Confirmed. Furthermore, he denotes that this note was altered from a $20.00 Mechanics Bank of St. John's, St. John's, Canada. The Haxby catalog number is AS-492-G12. Don’t let this Collectable $20.00 Banknote get away! This Obsolete Banknote has two repair patches on the reverse of the note, not uncommon for an Obsolete banknote made on such thin paper. All four margins have a mixture of small divots and splits. The paper seems to have toned with age, but the note is rare and intact. Lastly there some pinholes scattered throughout the note. These minor defects are all very common on a circulated Obsolete Banknotes that are 155+ years old. I grade this note as a Fine.
