Tyler35 BRISTOL BRANCH REVISITEDHarry A. Frye37 FRONT COVER: The "fifth" season, that short time of year when the last leaves have fallen, the grass is sere, and the ground awaits the first snow can be a time of crisp days and bright sun. November 10, 1986, was just such a day as the westbound empty Bow unit coal train drifted downgrade through East Gardner at 1:15 PM behind a mixed bag of Guilford 4-axle power. Leading was B&M G P40-2 No.308 followed by B&M GP40 No. 340 (ex-Conrail 3236), B&M G P39-2 No.352 (ex-D&H 7612), and D&H GP39-2 No.7401 (ex- Reading 3401). REAR COVER: One of the more unusual color schemes to crop up in the Guilford menagarie is that of the former Detroit Edison Company units acquired in February 1986, when DE gave up its lease on the locomotives which were owned by Chem Lease.Although the blue and silver remained,Guilford was quickto get the big "G" on as witness three of them on POSE in Lowell on March 5,1986. Lead unit 604 and third unit 602 are ex- DE SD4O's Nos. 017 and 006 respectively, both assigned to the Maine Central (the first ever 6-axle freight units for that road), while No.640, ex-DE U30C No.012,1ater renumbered 663, has been assigned to the B&M for some arcane reason. Trailing are two Maine Central U23b's, Nos. 281 and 288. A rare but pleasant sight several years into the GTI regime are two D&H U33c's in the attractive blue and gray color scheme, particularly when they are the sole power on a train. Such was the case at East Fitchburg on May 31,1986, when Nos. 661 and 659 headed PYPO through town. Both were originally numbered one hundred higher (761 and 759) when purchased by the D&H in 1970.
