Description: R-41c - Circular Date Stamp - August Belmont & Co. NY Oct. 20 1863 This stamp is much more collectable for it's cancel than it is for the stamp itself. August Belmont was born in Rhenish Prussia in 1813. In 1837, he sailed for Cuba via New York City with the intent of overseeing the Rothchilds' Cuban interests. The year 1837 was the end of President Andrew Jackson's 2nd term and was a period of financial/economic recession. Instead of traveling on to Cuba, Belmont remained in NYC to help salvage the floundering Rothchilds' American interests. By the end of the "Panic of 1837" the Rothchilds' American interests had collapsed. Believing that he could supplant the recently bankrupt firm, Belmont founded his own American Agency, "August Belmont & Company" and it became a huge success. The company dealt with foreign exchange transactions, commercial and private loans, as well as corporate, railroad, and real estate transactions. August Belmont was the founder and namesake of the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown series of American thoroughbred horse racing CV: $80.00 +++ CDS - Circular Date Stamp CC - Cut Cancel CV - Catalog Value SON - Socked on the Nose H - Hinged M - Mint F - Fine VF - Very Fine LH - Lightly Hinged MNH - Mint Never Hinged NH - Never Hinged NGAI - No Gum As Issued NG - No Gum OG - Original Gum XF - Extra Fine DLWM - Double Line Water Mark SF - Space Filler HR - Hinge Remnant UWM - Unwatermarked SLWM - Single Line Water Mark RG - Regummed VLH - Very Lightly Hinged SHIPPING COMBINED ON ALL MULTIPLE STAMP PURCHASES
