Description: This is a custom 12" figure commemorating a real pioneer of American history, Biddy Mason. Biddy Mason (August 15, 1818- January 1, 1891) was an African American pioneer nurse as well as a real estate pioneer once she moved to Los Angeles, California. Biddy was reportedly born into slavery in Hancock County, Georgia though her actual date and place of birth is not known for sure. Out of necessity her early education involved domestic and agricultural skills. What set Biddy apart was the education and knowledge she acquired in herbal medicine and midwifery from other slaves. She was a good pupil and learned quickly. Biddy's skills would be valuable to both slaves and slave owners alike. While no records are known to exist, Biddy is thought to have been sold multiple times. Her skills in medicine, child care, and livestock care made Biddy invaluable. When Biddy's owner decided to move to Texas he assured his slaves that they would be freed in Texas. Biddy's first thought was not to be seperated from her three children. Biddy and her children would gain their freedom. Biddy and her children would eventually move to Los Angeles, California. There Biddy would be a founding member of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church, donating the land the Church was built on. Biddy also established the first elementary school for black children in Los Angeles. Biddy was bi-lingual speaking fluent Spanish and very well known in the city. Biddy Mason is well recognized even today. She was also very involved the womens movement, being instrumental in women being provided opportunities that were denied them before. Biddy Mason was an amazing person and one of the most interesting figures in history This figure was designed mainly for display purposes for the history fan. Please Note- while this figure does not look exactly like Biddy Mason there is a nice resemblance. This figure would make a nice addition to any collection. PLEASE NOTE- with a shortage of female figures to work with for customs, this Barbie style figure seemed like the best available option and the figure displays well, though the figure is not very poseable. sold as is. stand included. Please note the following-when a figure is a custom figure that means it is not a licensed product,or "official" but something the customizer did by combining figures and accessories (sometimes including handmade items) from different makers and toy releases to come up with the custom figure or figures. I started customizing figures a few years back because I couldn't find more than a handful of "official" releases and unable to find figures of people I wanted to collect. I checked in to the market of custom figures. Most of the custom figures available back then cost several hundred dollars, so, I started doing my own. Because I needed to support my new hobby, I started selling some custom figures. My prices reflect my acquisition cost, time involved, and some profit. Thank you for the look, enjoy shopping!Shipping and Handling as follows: Domestic-priority mail- $15.00 1st item, $8.00 each additional item. items are normally shipped out within a day or two of cleared payment.
