Description: Media Condition : Near Mint (NM or M-) Sleeve Condition : Near Mint (NM or M-) sealed. Notes : Liner notes (Rod McKuen, 1994): Gregorian Chants are varied and many. There are inspirational chants for Advent, Joyous Hymns for Christmas, solemn cycles for Lent and Easter. And, to buoy the grieving and send the departed off to their destinations peacefully, whole requiem masses to lift and celebrate the spirit. This collection, drawn from all of the above, amply demonstrates the beauty, diversity, spirituality and considerable charm this medium of plainsong offers, and why the ancient monotones of Gregorian monks have found their way past hip-hop, heavy metal and current country hunks to the top of the world's music charts. Indeed, Gregorian chants are more popular today than they have been down through the centuries. In an age of noise and confusion, traffic lights and sound bites, here is music that brings calm and comfort to the back or foreground. While the spirituality of this music cannot be denied, the simplicity and directness of these chants make them ideal for meditation of any kind and as a relief for daily stress they are immediate and invaluable. The Gregorian chant is named for St. Gregory the Great, Pope from 590 to 640, who collected and reorganized existing chants into the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church. Early scholars insist that this unisonous music comes primarily from the Ambrosians of Italy, Frances's [sic] Gallicans and the Mozarabic worshippers of Spain. But it has even earlier roots in Byzantine, Syrian, Armenian, Ethiopian, Coptic and Russian Eastern Orthodox Church liturgies. In researching material for Sumaria's CD ROM "Ancient Cities", I discovered antecedents of Gregorian plainsong in the Psalms still sung in Jewish synagogues and derivations of monk chants from Greek and Egyptian monasteries during the first centuries after Christ. No wonder this true folk music has such universal appeal. This recording is drawn from three primary sources; The daily prayers as sung by The Benedictine Monks of St. Michael's de Laudes, songs and Benedictine masses of The Monks of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Benoit and a cycle of chants by the Ambrosian Singers who have added discrete harmonies to several of the original plainsongs. The evocative bells were digitally recorded at the peaceful mountain retreat, The Blessed Convent of Maria near Plein Ciel. Track List : 1. Sancte Dei 2. Salve Sanctus Angeli 3.
