Description: This is a Leeds pearlware tea caddy from a tea service hand-painted in blue with flowers and decorated with a chocolate brown ground color in a style that is known as Batavian ware or Batavia ware. There are three heart-shaped white reserves that have varying patterns and it was made in the late 18thc in England in imitation of Chinese Export teawares. There’s also a band of blue diaperwork painted around the shoulder. I have two of these caddies selling with the same pattern, the other with a silver lid. Condition is good, with only two minute chips side by side on the top rim, and one chip to the foot. There are also some glaze flaws from the original firing in the kiln. It stands a little over 3.5 inches tall and has a potter’s tally mark on the underside, with a retailer’s label from years ago. A cork in the opening would make it look a lot better on your shelf. The hand-made caddy is nicely potted and basically in great shape. Similar pagoda patterns appear on Caughley, Worcester, Davenport, Herculaneum, etc. Let me know if you have any questions, and check my other listings for more.Looking for antiques and reference books on ceramics?
