Some years it is almost impossible to keep the water clean and clear!Barley Straw and Barley Pellets will help!There have been several decades of university research that have confirmed what farmers and ranchers have always known - that barley when it decomposes (in either raw leaf, compressed pellet, or liquid extract forms) produces several chemical compounds that seem to inhibit algae formation! Barley is not an effective algaecide for pre-existing green or string algae (use a commercial liquid algaecide) - but it will help greatly prevent the growth of algae in clean and clear pond waters and acts as a water clairifier. Barley Straw is best used for long-term applications every 3-6 months as an inhibitor. It decomposes and releases its anti-algae chemicals fairly slowly. Barley Pellets are best used for shorter term application either monthly or for up to three months, depending upon the size of your pond and your climate. It decomposes and releases its anti-algae chemicals more rapidly than barley straw. Barley is a 100% natural, holistic and affordable way to deliver balance in your eco-system. Barley works to balance your water quality without putting your fish, aquatic plants, beneficial bacteria and basically your entire aquatic eco-system at risk! In reality when you use a heavy algaecide, all it does is kill algae and leaves it to fall out to the bottom of the pond where it become a nutrient load for the next round of algae! Don’t make your pond chemically dependent. The use of liquid barley has been used for decades in the European marketplace (especially in the UK) on extremely large lakes and smaller ornamental fish ponds. For many, many years locally here in America the use of barley straw extract has been used on large lakes, waterscapes and fish ponds. This naturally fish-safe method of balancing clear water in eco-systems has just recently has become popular in smaller ornamental fish ponds. Also, during the fermentation process of barley straw in a pond environment, microbial activity goes into over drive and tiny beneficial organisms like infusorian are teaming with life next to the barley in your pond. Fish fry (baby fish) do very well in ponds that have that kind of fish food availability.How much Barley Straw will I need? A standard rule of thumb is an 8 ounce (by weight) barley straw per 1000 gallons of pond water. Use one Barley Straw Bag for smaller fish ponds up to about 150 gallons and three (3) bags for ponds up to about 500 gallons and so on. Repeat treatment every 3-6 months, or when previous bag(s) of straw have mostly biodegraded. Use more frequently in hot climates. How much Barley Pellets will I need?For an already clear/clean water pond, one barley straw pellet bag (8 oz volume) will treat about 260 gallons +/-, and three bags (24 oz volume) will treat about 700 gallons. If your water is already turbid, double the recommended treatment amounts. Repeat treatment every 1-2 months. Applying the Barley Straw or Pellets Spring and Fall are the best times to apply barley straw (raw or pellets), because the algae is inhibited by decomposition, which accelerates as temperatures climb. For maximum effect, the straw should be in place before the algae begins to grow. For a small pond, place the mesh bag full of straw in the water it can be free-floated on the surface or you can weight it down with a brick or other heavy object to keep it on the bottom of the pond. Remember the straw will need time to decompose & ferment. Expect four to six weeks before barley straw becomes effective - less time for the barley pellets! For best results, place barley straw bags as close to a source of moving water as is possible - like in or near your pond's waterfall or pump outflow into your pond, so that the bio-grading materials can better circulate, as you will want clear, clean water to regularly pass over the barley bale and not clog up your pump's intake hose. I also recommend the use of added beneficial bacteria for your pond or water garden to improve the decomposition process. Also make sure you have adequate aeration and filtration!
