Bourgeau-Richards" Story: Barbara Bourgeau-Richards' world is peopled with cherubic, pear-shaped characters in aprons, scarves and smocks. It is a world of farnily scenes and tender moments, of hearts and flowers and gardens. Richards, a popular Romeo folk artist, enters that world each day when she sits down at her drawing table, takes out her palette of watercolors and puts brush to paper But she also lives in a world of intense pain caused by the degenerative joint disease rheumatoid arthritis, with which she was stricken in 1980. RICHARDS, WHOSE work is becom- ing well-known in country and folk art circles, began painting in 1986, after the disease had begun to take its toll "Tve always been an active person. I've never been one to sit around," she says. *When the arthritis flared up it really con- fined me. I couldn't do most of the things I had done before, like gardening, But then I found I was able to paint and I've been doing it every day since Richards' limited physical ability frus trated her In 1985, while recovering from two serous flare-ups, she signed up for a watercolor painting class at the Romeo adult education center. She hoped it would distract her from the constant pain. It was then that she created characters that have become her trademark cherubic figures with rosy cheeks and few distinct facial features in scenes of rural family life *My life was at a turning point when tarted painting." she says. "Because of my disease, I had hit bottom. As I started to rebuild myself I realized the importance of family, the support you can give to each other. Everything that I wanted in my life I just started transferring onto paper "I began to emphasize the positive I pictured myself before I was sick. Pitht away I realized the therapeutic value paint- ing gave me After spending nearly two jears on the road in folk art shows, the Richards now deal with representatives who market the Bourgeau-Richards Collection products across the country, in Canada and as far away as Tokyo and Australia In addition, Barbara's work is produced in cross-stitch, calendars, cards, collectors plates and a dinner line soon to be re- leased by Pfaltzgraff Company But Richards says she's still getting used to the idea that her work is in demand "I guess it's just a process of learning to believe in yourself, even when there are things standing in your way, like this ill- ness was for me,' she says. "I just never thought I would end up painting, I guess the best thing for me was when I no longer fought, and I started thinking, What do I have to lose?'
