Description: Buck was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. He attended the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) as a two sport (Baseball and Football) athlete and joined ROTC. When he joined the Army, he volunteered for the Paratroops. Buck joined Easy Company as their 2nd Platoon Leader while they were in England preparing for the invasion of Europe. It was well known that Buck was unusually close to the men in his platoon and was even caught gambling with them. Buck jumped into the night of 5-6 June filled with German antiaircraft fire over Normandy as the jumpmaster in Stick #70. Buck, along with everyone, was scattered across the fields of Normandy, landing in the little-known town at the time called Ste-Mere-Eglise. Buck, along with others, worked their way in the dark to Easy Company’s objective. Buck was one of two officers, the other LT Dick Winters to be part of the 12 man group that assaulted the German 105mm guns at Brecourt Manor that were firing on the Utah Beach landings. Buck would be awarded the Silver Star for his actions in the assault. It also showed that Buck was a true combat leader. Buck survived the Normandy Campaign and jumped into Holland as part of Operation Market-Garden. This was a much easier daytime jump and paratrooper units quickly organized and moved towards their objectives. Things began well for Easy Company as they moved through Eindhoven and several days later moved into Neunen. There they met a strong German counterattack that forced Easy to retreat. The Band of Brothers miniseries showed that during the heavy fighting Easy Company took heavy casualties including how Buck was shot through both cheeks of his butt. Buck was evacuated and missed the rest of the unit’s time in Holland. Buck rejoined Easy when they were taken off the line and sent to Mourmelon, France. Buck was there when the whole Division was rushed to the key town of Bastogne. Easy would settle into the Boris Jacque forest NE of Bastogne to hold the line at all cost in miserably cold, wet conditions, not to mention heavy fighting and horrible artillery barrages. It was during one of the heavier artillery attacks not one but two of Buck’s closest friends, Bill Guarnere and Joe Toye were badly injured during a heavy artillery attack. Buck was eventually taken off the line for trenchfoot and never returned to Easy Company. Buck took everything that was thrown at him; jumped into and lead troops in combat in both Normandy and Holland, was wounded in combat, experienced many days of little food, warmth and constant fighting in Bastogne and finally saw two of his best friends blown to pieces in the same day.
