Description: Product descriptionBansuri is a flute of India made from a single hollow shaft of bamboo with six or seven finger holes. An ancient musical instrument associated with cowherds and the pastoral tradition, it is intimately linked to the love story of Krishna and Radha. There are two varieties of bansuri: transverse, and fipple. The fipple flute is usually played in folk music and is held at the lips like a whistle. Because it enables superior control, variations and embellishments, the transverse variety is preferred in Indian classical music. The index, middle, and ring fingers of both hands are usually used to finger the six-hole bansuri. As with other air-reed wind instruments, the sound of a bansuri is generated from resonance of the air column inside it. Bansuri construction is a complex art. The bamboo suitable for making a bansuri needs to possess several qualities. It must be thin walled and straight with a uniform circular cross section and long internodes. Being a natural material, it is difficult to find bamboo shafts with all these characteristics, which in turn makes good bansuris rare and expensive. Suitable species of bamboo (such as Pseudostachyum) with these traits are endemic to the forests of Assam and Kerala. From the manufacturerThe Indian FluteMusic dates back in human history all the way to the time human beings began to communicate, and rests among the very building blocks of human community and society. The Indian Flute, or Bansuri, is deeply entrenched in Indian culture, seen in the hands of famous figures such as the Lord Krishna, the avatar of the God of Creation, Vishnu. Mastering the art is no easy task, but for those who feel that they are up to the task, or those who simply love music, we have made available handcrafted, traditional bamboo flutes made by artisans who honour the ancient techniques used to create these instruments. The SoundThe fipple style flute, wherein one blows into it like one would with a whistle, is the easier of the two to play. Handcrafted using the finest bamboo, the sound created is warm, unlike the shrill shrieks of an incorrectly crafted Bansuri. This instrument is very similar to the Western, plastic-made, Recorder. It's InfluenceThe transverse style flute, which could be said to have influenced the metallic Western Orchestra Flute as we have it today, provides much greater flexibility and control with regard to tone and pitch. Both flutes come with a string (colour may differ) wrapped in a simplistic manner around the flutes at six different places; so as to not deviate from the pure feeling that the bamboo Bansuri provides.HandcraftedHandcrafted by artisans well-versed with the ancient instruments, the flutes do not compromise structurally for the sake of aesthetics, and provide a professional sound. The BuildSturdy and durable in nature, these flutes generate beautiful, warm sounds once a person gains proficiency; given that these flutes were designed for the hands of a beginner, the instruments have been crafted in a manner as to expedite the beginner’s education. A great start to make if one wishes to learn the musical art, the flutes also make for a great gift to anyone you may know who’s yearning to learn the ancient art of the Bansuri.
