Museum Quality. Overview: We are pleased to offer this extremely rare Indian pottery created by the Tarahumara Indians before the turn of the century, 1860 to 1890, and possibly earlier. The Tarahumara Indians are an indigenous people part of the Uto-Aztecan Indian lineage of North and central America, and are closely related to the Apache of southwestern United States. They were originally inhabitants of the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico, and retreated to the Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madre Occidental, on the arrival of the Spanish explorers in the Sixteenth century. xxxx Today the Tarahumara remain a primitive people resilient in preserving and still practice much of there traditional culture and lifestyle, resistant to outside influences, living apart from technological society. Folk Art Pottery: The ‘Olla’ is a hand built vessel originally made for utilitarian purposes, without consideration for design, created by women potters as a vital part of the daily existence of the Tarahumara people – a thickly potted vessel of a moderately symmetrical shape, uniquely made of hand gathered rough red stone ground clay, hand coiled in a globular form with a bulbous body, a raised open mouth and wide inverted rim, sloping outward to broad shoulders midway, tapering down to an oval shaped basin (made to sit on rocks in an open fire), painted with mineral or vegetable oil pigment, and decorated with rawhide straps. xxxx Condition – the ‘Olla’ remains in its original state, untreated and unwaxed, overall, a very solid pot with the exception of minor chips in the rim and a heat fracture on the base. These imperfections are caused by continuous daily usage over an extensive period of time and distinguishes the authenticity and age of this wonderful piece of history. xxxx Origin:xxxxxxxxx North America.
