Description: This is an original etching by Francisco de Goya titled El Agarritado or The Garrotted Man. This is one of 4 images the artist created depicting prisoners who were executed by the French invaders, when Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Spain in 1808 and depict the theme of imprisonment and execution. This image was copied directly by the artist from a drawing that is in The Calcografia Nacional in Madrid. No working proofs were made, because it was perfectly executed on first attempt. Only 4 were printed contemporaneously. After the artist’s death in 1828, this plate along with others were then moved to Paris and later entrusted to master printmaker Armand Durand who editioned this one in 1880.
