HISTORY This Shippers Car Line Tank Car is a model of the 11,000 gallon tank cars manufactured in the 1940's and 1950's by American Car and Foundry (ACF). Only a few of the cars were ever owned by their users-- railroads, oil companies, and chemical companies. Instead, most of these tank cars were owned by numerous, independent, railroad leasing companies, large and small, who leased the cars to the users of the tank cars. Shippers Car Line was one of these independent railroad leasing companies. Gradually, through a series of mergers and acquisitions, almost all of these original leasing companies have been consolidated into just a handful of leasing companies. The surviving lessors own vast fleets of tank cars and other freight cars. The survivors lease the cars all over the USA to shippers and refiners of oil, gas, chemicals, and other liquids. Shippers Car Line was acquired by ACF (American Car and Foundry Company), one of the few remaining leasing companies.
