It is a great addition to any collection and is sure to impress. Although conservatively managed, the CB&Q was an innovative company. It was the first railroad to use a printing telegraph, the first to use radio, and the first to employ centralized traffic control. The most famous and visible innovation was the Zephyr line of diesel engines that marked the gradual phasing out of the steam engines. The Burlington was also the first passenger line to take full advantage of the passing scenery with the Burlington Vista Dome which debuted in 1945. The Vista-Dome North Coast Limited, was designed by famed industrial designer Raymond Lowey, enjoyed an eye-pleasing/Cascades Mountains-blending color scheme of a dark green roof, letterboards and window band, a thin white line below the window band, and pale mint green lower sides with black undercarriage and trucks. The beautifully matched consists were stunning, inside and out. Quiet elegance is the best description for this notable train. This Vista Dome car should actually be Green for Burlington's passenger service since they were introduced on their trains. Milwaukee countered with the Super Dome made by Pullman, and Santa Fe introduced its own "Big Domes" made by Budd. Although many people would agree that short domes offered better views than full-length domes, it still took three domes to exceed the number of dome seats on rival Milwaukee’s single Super Dome. The Northern Pacific probably chose to have four domes to be fair to Seattle and Portland passengers: the North Coast Limited split in Pasco, Washington, with part of the train going to Seattle and part to Portland. With four domes, passengers from each city could have a dome-coach and a dome-sleeper. Santa Fe's named trains were inaugurated in 1938 (initially between Chicago and Wichita), the northbound train each day was called the Chicagoan while the southbound train was called the Kansas Citian. When Burlington inaugurated its vista-domed Kansas City and American Royal Zephyrs on the Chicago-Kansas City route, the Santa Fe responded by ordering full-length domes for several trains serving the same route. Although Pullman, which manufactured the Milwaukee Super Domes, proposed to make similar cars for the Santa Fe, the railroad turned instead to Budd to build its “Big Domes.” In March, 1954, the Santa Fe added one of these domes to each of the six El Capitan all-coach Chicago-LA trains plus one each to a pair of trains that went between Chicago and Oklahoma City.
