Description: Asbestos workers handbook (1974 ). Out-of-print, hard-to-find 3" x 6 1/4" hard cover book with 136 pages by George A. Davis, an asbestos worker with over 30 years of experience. Asbestos References: Other than the cover and title page the word asbestos is not often mentioned, however the book is devoted to the installation of valve, fittings and pipe insulation of which asbestos was a common material used. Coincidentally, nowhere is it mentioned of the potential dust hazards of cutting or mitering asbestos insulation despite the studies and growing body of evidence from the 1930's to the 1970's I suppose that this book could still provide an experienced workers use of other insulating materials, if you just ignore the book title (SEE INTRODUCTION (PHOTO 5)MORE THAN ANYTHING, THIS BOOK IS A PIECE OF HISTORY AND AN EXAMPLE OF HOW LITTLE PROTECTION WAS OFFERED WORKERS. 1897: An Austrian doctor linked a patient's pulmonary issues to inhaling asbestos dust 1898: An English report cited widespread lung damage in asbestos mills 1906: Dr. Montague Murray recorded the first documented death of an asbestos worker from pulmonary failure 1924: The British Medical Journal published an article on the dangers of breathing asbestos dust 1930: Dr. Merewether's report on asbestos textile workers concluded that exposure shortened workers' lifespans 1933: The first case of asbestosis was reported in the United States 1934: Researchers discovered the link between asbestos exposure and cancer 1943: A mesothelioma-like tumor was reported 1949: Asbestos was widely understood to be harmful 1955: A major study linked asbestos exposure with cancer YET, THIS BOOK WAS PRINTED IN 1974 WITH ABSOLUTELY NO MENTION OF THE HAZARDS. Within ten years of the publication of this book, the use of asbestos was banned in much of the Western World.
