Description: Artemisia absinthium is a herbaceous evergreen perennial in the Asteraceae family. Its native range is from Europe to Siberia and the western Himalayas. Familiar names include wormwood, grand wormwood, absinthe, absinthium, absinthe wormwood, mugwort, wermout, wermud, wormit, and wormod. It is an ingredient in the alcohol Absinthe and is used for flavoring many wines and spirits. It is also used as a medicine for infections, upset stomach or to help an appetite. It can grow to around 2-3 feet tall and 1-2 feet wide with fibrous roots. The cauline leaves are green-gray in a spiral shape covered in silver tiny hairs. The basal leaves are 8-9 inches long with longer petioles in a tripinnate shape. The flowers are pale yellow in clusters with a tubular shape. They are in bloom from early summer until early autumn. Birds, bees, and butterflies are attracted to it. It prefers to grow in full sun with little to average water needs. Zones 4-8 Germination Mix equal parts of potting soil, vermiculite, and peat moss. Spread seeds on top of the potting media. Press seeds down into the media. Mist with a spray bottle. Uncover and mist as needed to keep the media moist. Cover the seed tray with clear plastic to maintain a 75F. Place under a bright light until germination.
