Kemeys for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition; while the originals were made of a temporary plaster, they were recast in bronze when presented in 1894 as a gift to the Art Institute. Kemeys referred to the north lion as being ‘on the prowl’, and the southern lion as having an ‘attitude of defiance’.
