Ref # : CX27 -- Uruguayan Boxer Dogomar Martinez Career: Dogomar Martínez Casal (Montevideo, July 30, 1929 - Montevideo, February 7, 2016) was a Uruguayan boxer who shone in the 1940s and 1950s, first as an amateur boxer and then as a professional, retiring at the age of 30. He represented Uruguay at the 1948 Olympic Games . Specialists on the subject consider him the best Uruguayan boxer of all time. When he was 12 years old, his brother took him to the gym to work out because he noticed he was very weak. He learned to box with Francisco Constanzo at the American Texas on the corner of Constitución and Miguelete, next to his parents' bar on Justicia and Pagola. After a year he had gained 21 kilos, he fought for the first time at 14 years old and beat his opponent by knockout. At 15 years old he became National Champion, at 16 he was Rioplatense Champion and at 17 he was South American Champion. His debut as an amateur boxer was on September 8, 1944 against Cándido Silva. As an amateur he was champion 18 times: 3 Novice tournaments, 4 Montevideo City tournaments, 3 National tournaments, 4 Rioplatense Selection tournaments and 4 Latin American tournaments. At the age of 18 he participated in the 1948 London Olympics in the Middleweight category On January 16, 1951 he turned professional facing the Uruguayan boxer Domingo Arregui. Throughout his career he had 57 fights, won 49 fights, 22 by knockout , lost 3 and added 5 draws. He was South American middle heavyweight champion on three occasions. He was only defeated by Archie Moore, German boxer Hans Stretz, who was number 1 in the world rankings, and Brazilian boxer Luiz Ignacio, when they faced each other for the South American title in 1959. He also defeated the famous Kid Gavilán, world champion of the time, on his South American tour. Several of his professional fights took place at the Centenario Stadium and the Peñarol Palace in the city of Montevideo Famous Fight against Archie Moore: Perhaps Dogomar Martinez's most memorable fight is the fight against Archie Moore, the American world light heavyweight champion who was unable to defeat the Uruguayan boxer by knockout at Luna Park, who lasted the 10 rounds agreed upon. Dogomar arrived at that fight with a record of 25 undefeated fights. Dogomar had to gain weight and fight out of his weight class, which made him sacrifice mobility. During the fight Dogomar fell to the canvas twice, and Moore's blows were a terrible beating for the Uruguayan, but he resisted until the end, losing the fight on points. That evening was attended by Juan Domingo Perón and Eva Perón, and the stadium was packed with people. During that time, relations between Uruguay and Argentina were very tense. The restrictions on passports, visas and customs were lifted because of this fight. Despite the defeat, the public cheered Martinez as if he had won the fight. At the end of the fight, Moore congratulated Dogomar and Peron embraced both contenders. -- Shipping: Shipping cost is based upon actual cost of shipping, we ship from Uruguay where the items are, through FedEx which offers a fantastic shipping record.
