Description: This is an antique Victorian gold filled pin, brooch, and pendant with taille d'epargne or niello decoration. The clasp opens easily, and closes securely. There is an additional loop where a chain can be added so this can be worn as a pendant. The piece measures just under 1.5 inches long by slightly over .75 inches wide. Niello is a black mixture, usually of sulphur, copper, silver, and lead, used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal, especially silver. It is added as a powder or paste, then fired until it melts or a least softens, and flows or is pushed into the engraved lines in the metal. Basse-taille (sometimes referred to as “jeweler’s enamel”) is a technique of enameling in which a pattern is engraved in low relief or beaten upward in repoussé, and then filled with translucent or opaque enamel, often black. Taille d’épargne, sometimes referred to as black enamel tracery, translates from the French literally as “saving cut.” It is a variation of champlevé whereby engraved lines forming a design are incised into the metal and are filled with opaque enamel– usually black – like base taille enamelling but without the subtle depth variations. This technique was often used to decorate bracelets, watch cases, chatelaines, and mourning jewelry. Taille d’épargne remained in vogue through the mid-1850s when it was mass produced by the Birmingham firms. This piece will be insured for its full value. Thanks for looking!
