This stunning antique stretch bracelet consists of twenty genuine Whitby Jet panels and faceted beads.The striking bracelet pattern consists of a larger front oval panel with crisscross carving to the front, flanked by two faceted round beads along with unique umbrella-shaped carved panels which taper in size; all newly hand strung onto a double black elastic cord to fit most wrist sizes.As well as being lightweight, the Whitby jet bracelet is a lovely intense black colour with lustrous shine, combined with a warm and smooth texture against the skin - all indicative of genuine Whitby Jet.The largest front oval panel measures 2.60cm x 2.20cm, tapering down to 1.50cm wide smallest umbrella panel at the back.The antique bracelet originates from England, and Whitby jet is from the English seaside town of Whitby. It is a fossilized wood from the ancient monkey puzzle tree. Jet from the Whitby region is said to be the best quality due to its tough density and high sheen. Jet was popularized by Queen Victorian who wore only black mourning jewellery following the death of her beloved husband Prince Albert in 1861.Today, this antique bracelet remains a fabulous statement piece and is a wonderful example of 19th century mourning jewellery!
