Description: From a local estate auction: a tea tablecloth or table topper measuring 28 by 26." This is made of a good quality mid-weight linen that has mellowed to just off-white. The linen has a lovely texture. The edges have 3" hems, and there is a border of Mexican drawn work all around. This is a technique of needle lace using the threads of the fabric, twisted and tied into patterns; it was popular in the 1890s to 1920s. The border has a twisted pattern and is more than 1" wide; at the corners there are large emblems resembling stars. They have different looks so I have included photos of them all - at least one appears to have some damage. I have laundered and pressed this, and found the linen to be sound condition - soft, springy, and supple, not brittle. I found no holes, stains, or rips, but I found a little unravelling on two of the corner emblems, also shown in closeup. This looks great over a darker cloth or table.
