Description: Pair of George III Sterling Silver Candlesticks, John Arnell, London, 1768 This rare matched pair of 11” tall George III sterling silver candlesticks, crafted by John Arnell during his brief career from 1763 to 1773, features hallmarks for London, 1768, including the lion passant, crowned leopard’s head, and the date mark “n”. The maker’s mark, partially visible, aligns with Arnell’s known output. Unlike many of his smaller silver items—such as snuff boxes—this pair highlights his larger-scale craftsmanship, adding to its rarity. Each candlestick rests on a stepped square base with gadrooned detailing and unique leaf-like corner embellishments. The design features spiral-fluted stems leading to campana-form sockets with detachable square spiral nozzles. One nozzle bears a secondary hallmark (photo 19), while the other remains securely lodged. We made no attempt to force its removal. Together, the pair weighs 44.25 ounces (1,254 grams), with individual weights of 1 lb 6.5 oz and 1 lb 5.75 oz. The candlesticks are in good condition with minor wear around the bases and have been left unpolished to preserve their original patina. Shipping: These candlesticks will ship via UPS with full insurance and require signature upon delivery for secure acceptance.
