Description: Antique Spanish-American Era ~ Summer Helmet ~ I found the following description on another site (International Military Antiques), and I thought it was great: This is a fantastic Spanish-American war era sun helmet in great condition for it's age. In the 1880s, the U.S. Army started to adopt sun helmets, especially for use during the hot summer months. These saw active service in the Spanish American War of 1898, especially in the tropical climate in Cuba. While often called "Pith Helmets", the U.S. variety was usually made of cork material. The interior is lined with green fabric under the brim, with khaki fabric inside the crown. The leather sweatband is still fully intact. The front brim has some pebbly material inside -- maybe broken up cork? Thanks for looking and happy to answer questions if I can.
