Description: This original watercolor painting of the Parthenon is spare in color palette, but incredible in shading, painted by a skilled artist. It is almost certainly European in origin because the title is literally in Greek. I believe it is παρθένος , which is the Greek word for parthenos, the derivative of the name "Parthenon". This universally known structure, the Parthenon, was a model for much of Greek and Roman architecture. It was built to show off the wealth and power of Athens at the height of its empire. I cannot make out the signature of the artist and I don't know the exact age. However, it has been custom framed in West Virginia and the paper backing is very likely from the 1950's - the painting could possibly be older. The painting is rendered in shades of deep teal green, pale blue, black, and chocolate brown; faint pencil lines are visible from the original sketch. It is mounted (and signed) on a beige board. The frame is wood with black enamel paint and has an elegant gold rim and still has the original sticker from the frame gallery attached. It is small and measures 8 5/8 inches in height and is approximately 12 inches wide (framed), landscape configuration. This is a very old picture, so there is some natural age-related discoloration of the paper. The picture itself is in very good vintage condition, with no visible stains, tears, or holes. The matte is also clean with no stains, marks, or holes. The frame has some scratches and scuffs, consistent with age and normal vintage wear. The glass is not chipped or cracked and is also in very good condition. The mounting of the picture is is very secure and tight and the hanging bracket and wire are completely intact.
