The Haig Pottery was started in 1817, in Philadelphia by Thomas Haig and a partner. The partnership lasted but two years and Thomas Haig then ran the shop with his two sons. The pottery ran at least until the 1870's. This pottery was always overshadowed by the larger pottery in Philly, the Remmey Pottery. Because of the general attention given to the Remmey Pottery and the wishes of the Haig's to be more private with things, less is known about the Haig's and their stoneware. We do know the Haig's made some figural stoneware in the log cabin banks that have become so collectible. They also, used some alternate glazes, wild cobalt blue designs and made off-market forms such as chicken waterers and burial monuments. This is a storage jar we thought had merit in its waves of cobalt blue surrounding the shoulder and the crackling exterior layer of glaze which looked primitively interesting. We believe this is a Bristol glaze on both the outside and the inside of the crock. The crock once sat on stilts in the kiln when fired and these, when removed, caused some flakes off the underside. There are some flakes on the lip edge both glazed over and not, these unglazed ones from use and the glazed ones from when the crock was made. The crock is 10" tall and 7" wide. The Haig Pottery, a unique pottery in Philadelphia, with a great 19th Century history and still some mysteries about it all! ENJOY * ENJOY * ENJOY!!!! Note about restoration and repair: If we see it... we say it! Note about shipping costs: The shippers are brutal! We don't have broken shipments because we pack and then pack again! Our shipping costs are kept as low as possible.
