Ecce Homo Baroque style religious oil painting by Guido ReniPainted 1639-1640Location: Louvre, Paris, FranceGuido Reni (1575-1642) was an Italian Bolognese School painter of the Baroque period. His works are painted in the classical manner, primarily religious , mythological and allegorical subjects. "So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.Pilate said to them, ' Behold the man!' ".— The Bible , John 19:5 In John 19, the Roman ruler, Pontius Pilate , brings Jesus out before the crowd and says, "Behold the man!"This moment, later translated into the Latin phrase " Ecce Homo " has since been visualized by many artists, each bringing their own perspective to the suffering of Jesus Christ during his trial, crucifixion, and death. 2. Rouget de L'Isle chantant la Marseillaise An 1849 oil painting by artist Isidore Pils (1815–1875), French academic painter of religious and military subjects. The subject of the painting, Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle (1760-1836), was a French army officer of the French Revolutionary Wars. Isle is known for writing the words and music of the song, in 1792, which would later be known as " La Marseillaise " and become the French national anthem. Rouget de Lisle wrote the song after the declaration of war by France against Austria. It was originally titled "Chant de guerre pour l'Armée du Rhin" (" War Song for the Army of the Rhine ").The French National Convention adopted it as the First Republic's anthem in 1795. The song acquired its nickname after being sung in Paris by volunteers ( French National Guard troops during the French Revolution ) from Marseille marching to the capital. Seated at the singer's left is Baron Philippe Friedrich Dietrich ( 1748-1793), French scholar and politician. Dietrich, the mayor of Strasbourg, encouraged Rouget de l'Isle to write various patriotic songs, including the song which became known as "La Marseillaise".The song was first performed in Dietrich's living room.Dietrich was also a scientist, author of a mine survey and promoted development of blast furnaces in France. He was a distinguished geologist and chemist, and a member of the Academy of Sciences.
