Description: This is a handsome 120+ year old Pewter Lidded Tankard/ug/Stein made by James W. Tufts of Boston, Mass. #4431. It was made probably in the late 1800s or early 1900s. It is in very good condition for its years with no dents, dings, or misshaping of the rims, however there is some tarnishing on the inside and a few minor scuffs/surface scratches on the handle and body as shown in the last 2 photos yet they aren't very noticeable & it still displays beautifully. It measures approximately 7 1/2" tall (not including the lid), 8" tall with the lid down and a tad over 9" tall to the top of the thumb lift with a 3 1/4" rim diameter and a 4" base diameter. The capacity is a good 28 oz. filled to about 1/2" from the rim. The weight is approx. 1 lb. 12.6 oz. prior to packaging. Impression stamped on the underside reading: James W. Tufts - Boston, Mass. #4431. Information about James W. Tufts: Born on February 11th, 1835, in Charlestown, Massachusetts, James Walker Tufts was the son of Leonard Tufts (a blacksmith) and Hepzibah Fosdick Tufts. James W. Tufts was a metallurgist, silver plater, and pewterer based out of Boston, Massachusetts. It was there that, at the age of 27, he established the Arctic Soda Fountain Company. Between the years 1875 and 1895, he worked as a silver plater in Boston. According to his listing on the 1880 census, at the time, he lived in Medford, Massachusetts, and was a manufacturer of silverplated soda fountain components. On June 23rd, 1885, he was issued a patent for his original designs and improved process for imprinting Britannia silver and other soft metals with said designs. The stellar success he achieved allowed him to build his very own village. Because of his ever-flagging health, Tufts took regular vacations to boost his constitution. In search of a region where he could get plenty of fresh air and sunlight, his sights eventually alighted on North Carolina, where he would found the town of Pinehurst, which began life as a resort named “Tuftstown.” Initially, he bought 500 acres, but soon he multiplied that number tenfold, purchasing another 5,500 acres.Tufts died on February 3rd, 1902, in Pinehurst, Caldwell, North Carolina. A little over a decade following his death, in 1915, his silverplated soda parts manufacturing firm—the Arctic Soda Fountain Company—ceased operations. Through James’s son Leonard, and his grandson Richard, Pinehurst remained under the supervision and control of the Tufts family until 1970.
