The photo(s) came in an envelope (not included ) with the address 26,Rue Bab-Azoun, 26, ALGER photographer Alexandre Leroux born in Beziers 1836- died 1912. Leroux operated several photography studios in Algiers, including his premiere studio on Bab Azoum. His photographs offer a rare glimpse into the lives of the people of Algiers and their rich cultural lives, as well as its architecture, religious sites. A Member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts d'Alger, Leroux lived in Algers, opening his first studio at 9 rue de La Lyre,Algiers, in 1876 purchased the studio of Claude Portier at 14 rue Bab-Azoun. The address from where this photo(s) was published 26 rue Bab-Azoun,Alger. Bab Azoun ("Gate of Grief") is the name of a city gate of Algiers. The rue Bab Azoun which runs parallel to the boulevard de la Republique and crosses the rue Bab El Oued in the city center. Many of Leroux's photos were published as postcards up till the 1950s or so.The Algiers-based photographer published his work monthly in parts over the course of 5 years, documenting the country's life and customs, professions and types, its principal cities, markets, and architecture in a variety of city and desert scenes. He produced numerous photographs of Algeria until his death 1912 when his sons continued selling his prints using his stamp. Islam , the religion of almost all of the Algerian people, pervades most aspects of life.
