Description: ARTIST: Christian Andreas Schleisner is a well-listed Danish artist, whose works have been offered at auctions multiple times, including famous auction houses such as Bruun Rasmussen, Christie’s and Bassenge, and who exhibited at the famous Charlottenborg and in London. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen and went on study trips to Germany, Paris, Holland and Italy. In his early years he painted historical scenes, but from around 1840 onwards, inspired by German and Dutch trends at the time and encouraged by his professor, J.L. Lund, he mostly painted, often humorous, interior scenes from the everyday lives of ordinary people. In 1858 he achieved the title of professor. Note that the painting is unsigned, but the painting is so archetypical for this artist, that I dare to attribute it to him. PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is a warm, humorous rendering of an elderly woman, who, after having eaten her porridge, has succumbed to sleepiness with the plate and spoon still in her lap. 3 hungry ducklings are at her feet trying to catch small drops of porridge dripping from the plate. I personally love the content expression on her face, as she peacefully sleeps near the fireplace in her kitchen. I’ll date the painting to somewhere between 1850-1880. Unsigned. SIZE: With frame: 44,5 cm/17.5" * 41 cm/16.1". Without frame: 33,5 cm/13.2" * 30 cm/11.8". CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint, but with a little craquelure. The frame has scratches and stains.
