Description: ARTIST: Frederik Christian Kiærskou is a well-listed Danish artist, whose works have been offered at auctions multiple times, including famous auction houses such as Bruun Rasmussen, Christie’s and Bassenge, and who exhibited at the famous Charlottenborg and in both London and Paris. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen and was a student of famous Danish artists Eckersberg and J.L. Lund. He went on study trips to Germany, Switzerland and Sweden. He was first and foremost a landscape painter and often found his motifs either in Denmark or in the Alps. In 1859 he achieved the title of professor. Note that the painting is unsigned, but the painting is typical for this artist and is also attributed to him in an inscription on the back of the inner frame, so I have no doubt, that he is the artist. PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is a wonderful rendering of community life at the Frijsenborg estate in June 1860. To the right is, what I presume is the father, standing next to his oxcart and in the far distance, one can make out a mother and her child walking down a dirt road towards their home – a small house with a smoking chimney half concealed by the trees in the garden. Built in 1693 by Count Niels Friis and located in Eastern Jutland, Frijsenborg Castle was the heart of a shire, which, by the end of the 18th century, included around 450 square kilometers of land and therefore a lot of common folks lived within the grounds of the estate. Interestingly, a lot of famous Danes - f.ex. H.C. Andersen, Karen Blixen and Grundtvig - is known to have visited this castle. The painting is dated on the back of the inner frame to June 1860. Unsigned. SIZE: With frame: 45 cm/17.7" * 35 cm/13.8". Without frame: 32 cm/12.6" * 22 cm/8.7". CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint. The frame has scratches and stains.
