Description: We’ve owned this antique map for over 40 years. It’s time to downsize and for the map to go to a new home. This antique nautical map is by Mount & Page and showcases The Chesapeake Bay and its surrounding states, including Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The frame measures 24 inches tall by 35 inches wide, with the sight measuring about 20.5 inches tall by 31.75 inches wide. This folding map is an authentic and original piece by William Mount and Thomas Page, Tower Hill (London, England). The cartographers, engraver and printer did an exceptional job depicting the region's coastal features, waterways, and the surrounding landscape. We recently consulted an auction house art professional in an effort to try to determine the age of the map. The map was first printed in 1689 according to the reference book "The Mapping of North America II" by P.D. Burden, but was also printed for decades after. Our auction house professionals’ best estimate is the late 1600s due to the vibrancy of the red color in the map and the sharpness of the plates. On later maps, the red was not as vibrant and over time the plates tended to get dull, meaning the map was created earlier in the life of the plate rather than later. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions about the map. I will do my best to get you answers.
