Description: Mid 1900s vintage Mattapoisett (MA) basket in good overall original condition with a couple of minor breaks. (Please review images). Made by Gladys Ellis (same decorative star appears in other known pieces) or one of her students.. Gladys was well recognized as a folk artist and expert basket maker in coastal Massachusetts. Examples of her work are in the collections of Boston Museum of Modern Art and The New Bedford Whaling Museum. Because of fragility and limited numbers, these are considered to be quite rare. Primary material is pine needles and dimensions are 10” x 7” x 6-1/2”. From a Massachusetts estate and fresh to the market. Hard to find, and a natural for collections of New England folk art or Nantucket baskets. (Or Cape Cod anything)
